WARNING: Dr. Nadia gets you pregnant!
I have a reputation for "getting people pregnant". Lol. I was told many times that people came to look for me because they overheard somebody say "Be careful. Don't go to that Doctor unless you want to get pregnant." I can see how this could be an issue for some people...but for others, it's a welcomed miracle! My favourite story is that of a couple that had been married for 13 years, had adopted a little girl 7 years before, and then got pregnant (accidentally) TWICE after c

Is "FAT" the new "NORMAL"?
So this week a health website posted this chart to Facebook, and the backlash was OBESE (diet practitioner humor). There were hundreds of comments from people extremely offended, and stating that even though they were considered "obese" according to this .chart, they in fact felt "normal". The actual BMI (Body Mass Index) chart doesn't look like this, it's a RANGE, anywhere between 20-40 lbs per height. What this means is that 2 different people could be 5'10" but one might w

What the heck is that? Just eat MAYO
This week as I was walking down the aisle of a major department store, something caught my eye and I had to pick it up and read the ingredients. It said "Mayonnaise Type Dressing". What the heck is that, I thought??? Of course at the bottom it said "55% less fat than our regular mayonnaise". And that's supposed to be a good thing, right? In this society it is. So let me translate this for you: Mayo-type dressing means it is FAKE and processed. That's the first problem. If it

It's Personal
Doctors are doing exactly what they are SUPPOSED to be doing. When they tell you to eat at least 120 g/d of grains, they are following the Canadian Dietary Guidelines. Somehow, at some point, someone came up with this amount as a requirement. The justification is that if you don't eat enough carbs your body and brain won't work, and you may even develop ketoacidosis, a very serious condition that can happen to diabetics (this here is an oxymoron, but I won't get into it). Whe

Diabetes: A Historical Look
di·a·be·tes mel·li·tus məˈlītəs,ˈmeli-/ noun noun: diabetes mellitus The term Diabetes comes from a Greek word meaning "siphon", coined in the second century AD, and mellitus comes from the latin word mel which means "honey", both indicating that people with this disease were "siphoning off sweet water". (2). Patients with Diabetes produce excess urination and both their blood and urine have elevated levels of glucose, or "sugar". The body's normal response to elevated levels

Forget the Paleos: What happened to our Native People?
When talking LCHF, a lot of attention is focused on the Paleolithic people and what they ate. This is in part due to the overwhelming attention that the Paleo diet and advocates have gotten over the last few years. It is true that people thousand and thousand of years ago ate a LCHF diet. It is also true that our physiology hasn't changed much at all since then. Problem is, most people can't relate to our caveman ancestors. What if we focus on more recent traditional people a

What's wrong with MARGARINE and VEGETABLE OILS, you may ask?
Yesterday I wrote a post about REAL food and ranted about being given margarine and vegetable oil at at restaurant as opposed to the butter and olive oil that I asked for. I cringe to think this, but I realize that some, maybe many of you, quietly asked yourselves, "But what's wrong with margarine and vegetable oil?". "Aren't they better for you?", you may ask. "Aren't these two lower in FAT", because fat is the BIG BAD WOLF of diet. I have no simpler way of answering this ex

REAL Food, please!
My kids had a P.A. day and so, we went out for the day. On our way to a Play Place, we stopped for lunch and since I didn't want to take them to a fast-food joint, I decided to take them to a rotisserie chicken place, a "healthier" choice. "Chicken and salad, please". I also asked for some butter and olive oil to improve the quality of our meal as it had protein but not enough fat, for my taste and, my kids' brains. Low and behold, they gave me MARGARINE and VEGETABLE OIL. W

LCHF: What's in a name?
The LCHF "umbrella" What's in a name? "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2) William Shakespeare What all the LCHF diets have in common is their restriction of Carbs and higher consumption of Fats. Although LCHF stands for Low Carb High Fat Diet, I like to refer to it as LOWER Carb and HIGHER Fat. Depending on which practitioner you follow, which phase of the diet you are in, or what your health goals are, you may

Critics of the LCHF diet: Who are they?
The LCHF lifestyle follows a diet Lower in Carbs and Higher in Fat than the "average" diet consumed TODAY. Consequently, people for the LCHF diet believe that we should eat less carbs and more fat than the dietary allowances in our food guides. This is pretty general across borders, whether in the USA, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Portugal, Britain, South Africa, Sweden... these are just a few of the countries that I know that have very prominent MEDICAL doctors who champion a
